Professor John Drennan is the Director of the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis at The University of Queensland. An expert in the relationship between microstructure and physical property of materials, Professor Drennan has a long history of examining many different types of materials using electron microscopy. This includes ceramics and metals and more recently nanostructured materials in association with Professor Lu’s group at UQ. Specialising in gaining an understanding of the role microstructure plays in the conducting properties of ionic conductors, Prof Drennan has built an international reputation in the general field of solid-state ionics - a field that includes the development of fuel cell systems. His major contribution to the field has been the observation that control and modification of grain boundary regions in ionic conducting ceramics can play a major role in determining the properties of the material. With a strong crystallography background and a wide range of experience in materials research, Prof Drennan brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the challenge at hand in developing and characterising nanostructured materials.
