Preparation and functionalisation of magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical application

This project focuses on developing a robust method for the synthesis of tailored composite nanoparticles consisting of a magnetic iron- oxide core and a shell of gold. These properties render the particles highly suitable for use in protein separation, targeted drug delivery and biological monitoring.

Major achievements

- In-depth characterisation and quantification of the step-wise gold-shell formation process was completed.
- Various aspects of the work were presented at four conferences and manuscripts have been accepted for publication in Chemistry of Materials.

Future plans and directions

Future work will focus on the modification of the synthesised particles to suit various applications. Rigorous proof of concept testing and detailed characterisation of the particle properties pertinent to various applications will also be carried out.
