New nanomaterials electrodes for high-performance Li-ion batteries

Nanomaterials offer higher energy densities and better rate capabilities for lithium batteries when they are used in electrodes of these devices. This research direction is focused on synthesis of nanomaterials with an improved performance in lithium batteries.

Major achievements

V2O5 nanorods with a rectangular cross section have been synthesised and tested in Li batteries. The materials have a well-defined crystalline orientation. Each nanorod is elongated along the [010] crystallographic direction, and the surface is occupied mostly by {001} facets. Such an orientation favours a good cycling stability in an electrode of a lithium battery. The nanorods maintain a stable capacity of around 260 mAh/g with no sign of much degradation after 50 cycles.

Future plans and directions

Other promising crystalline systems for lithium batteries are to be investigated.
